Do you remember the night we played the board game I had made from scraps of lumber and leftover paint? We had grilled “naked” (sauceless) chicken and sat outside watching the fireflies come up from the ivy. We thought we saw a bat and decided we should build a bat box.


“I love collards,” he said when we met that October evening. I had told him about my garden. So the next weekend I planted seedlings from Norfolk County Feed and Seed. They are now a regular part of my fall and winter garden. What can I say? Everyone loves collards.


He is an architect. He works with shapes, masses, and voids in ways that amaze me. He builds and restores. I am not an architect. I work with wood to make this house a home. Nevertheless, I can look in my box of wood scraps and imagine soaring architectural wonders.
